You say EHIC is a good thing for my organisation.
What do our trade bodies think?
Association of British Travel Agents (ABTA), Association of British Insurers (ABI) and Association of Travel Insurance Intermediaries (ATII) are in favour of EHIC and are actively supporting the promotion. They recognise that it offers benefits for both consumers and the travel and insurance industries. Other trade and professional associations have also been very positive.
How would the travel or insurance industries benefit from promoting EHIC?
The main reason for supporting EHIC is the higher perceived ‘duty of care’ and service your customers will get from your organisation. In addition, EHIC reduces the amount of work hours spent on administration.
There will be opportunities to engage with the Department of Health on incentive schemes and competitions for employees. Look out for further information on this website.
If a customer books a last-minute break and doesn't have an EHIC, how can I help them get one quickly?
Your customers can apply for an EHIC in the following ways:
Online at: www.dh.gov.uk/travellers
By phone on 0845 606 2030
By post:
EHIC Applications
PO Box 1115
Newscastle-upon-Tyne
NE99 1SW
The quickest way is to complete the application form online, which means that they will get their EHIC within 5-7 days.
What does the new E111/EHIC cover?
An EHIC entitles your customers to free or reduced-cost, state-provided medical treatment if they fall ill or have an accident whilst in any of the European countries listed on the next page. It also covers treatment for chronic illnesses (like diabetes), maternity care, illnesses prior to departure, kidney dialysis and oxygen therapy.
